Local Funeral Home Helps Vets and Soldiers

by Tom Golden

What do Cell Phones, Sweaters and Wreaths have in common with a funeral home?

In the case of Virgil T. Golden Funeral services, they are a part of our Vets and Soldiers program that we are offering again this year to honor these service men and women. Even though there are two holidays in the year, Veterans Day in the fall, and Memorial Day in the spring, our service men and women sacrifice their time and safety every single day of the year, to preserve our freedoms. With Golden's some of our programs are year round, and some are seasonal. Here's three programs that have been popular with both vets, their families, and the general public.

Wreaths Across America

A seasonal program that organizes the placing of Christmas wreaths at cemeteries nationwide, including Arlington National Cemetery. Various funeral homes around the country participate in the educational aspects and also placing orders for wreaths from the public who want to participate. Saturday December 14th 2013 is Wreaths Across America Day. It began as The Arlington Wreath project started by Morrill Worcester in 1992 with the donation and laying of 5000 Christmas wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery. It was relatively obscure until 2005 when a photo of the stones adorned with wreaths and covered in snow circulated around the internet. The project received National attention. In 2006 over 150 State & National cemeteries held wreath laying ceremonies simultaneously. By 2008 over 300 locations held wreath laying ceremonies in every state, Puerto Rico and 24 overseas cemeteries. Over 100,000 wreaths were placed on veterans graves. Over 60,000 volunteers participated.

You may honor your loved one with a wreath at any local cemetery by sponsoring a $15 Wreath to adorn their grave, now through December 1st.. Golden's is taking orders now for a wreath for your family member, loved one, and hero.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
Cell Phones for Soldiers Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing cost-free communication services to active duty military members and veterans.

Sweaters for Veterans

On November 11, 2013 Americans throughout the world will commemorate Veterans Day, a day set aside to thank our nation’s veterans for service given and sacrifices made to protect the freedoms our great nation. Virgil T. Golden Funeral Services is one of nearly one thousand Veterans & Family Memorial Care funeral homes providers nationwide that is sponsoring Operation Sweaters For Veterans.

Everyone in the community is invited to support our veterans by donating sweaters and gloves at our location in Salem:
